Reporter wanted!

LOCAL GOVERNMENT REPORTER (full-time temporary)

Quad Town Forum

Vibank, Sask.

Apply by: Sept. 15, 2020

The award-winning Quad Town Forum is hiring a full-time news reporter/photographer to help cover our growing readership area of approximately 20,000 people. This is a term position, currently scheduled to end March 31, 2021, with the possibility of a one-year extension, and a high probability of being good for your portfolio either way.

The successful applicant (potential spoiler: It could be you!) will report to the publisher/editor and be responsible primarily for town, village and RM council coverage in the suburban and rural communities immediately east of Regina. Don’t let the small population of many of those communities fool you either. There are acres of substantial stories out here to keep you busy — along with a few that even the councillors themselves will admit are a bit mundane. (Hey, not every meeting can be a home run.) Education, health, RCMP, libraries and recreation board assignments may also be assigned from time to time.

Travel will be required throughout our coverage area, though most of it will keep you within 20-25 minutes of Regina. Evening work will also be required regularly, but weekend assignments will be rare. You’ll also have two weeks off around Christmas and New Year’s.

Preference will go to candidates who have completed at least some journalism school, have a basic understanding of Canadian Press style, can work well independently, and know what an apostrophe is. We don’t expect you to know it all when you first get here. Just show us you care about the craft of journalism.

We’re a small shop, locally and independently owned. More often than not, that’s been a good thing. Sometimes it has limitations. But if you’re comfortable with that, we want to help set you up for your next big gig, and we think this is a pretty good place to do it. If four provincial first-place finishes for our work in the last three years alone are any indication, the judges for the Saskatchewan Weekly Newspaper Association’s annual awards competition seem to agree too.

To apply, please email a cover letter, resume and writing samples to publisher Brad Brown at quadtownforum@sasktel.net.
